Ok John, which 'C' is this? I assume the one that implies horses (racetrack/horseshoe)? Saw more like these at Commerce in the 6900's last week.

The C means it is an AC traction unit (as opposed to a DC unit). IMO an A would make more sense.

I thought the "C" stood for the amount of axles. ES = Evolution Series, 44 = 4400 horsepower, A = Alternating Current & C = 6 axles, as opposed to ES44DC, with the D standing for direct current.

Hey Darren, thats how i thought they were listed as you explained. What about the BNSF ES44C4 though? Its only a b-b truck power configuration with AC traction motors.

Guys; I was refering to to incomplete location listing. C4's seem to be doing fine on the BNSF.

 |
If the C is for 6 axles, it would technically be incorrect. A C truck has 3 powered axles. The C4 would be an A-1-A since the center axle is not powered.
