I'm puzzled by this photo.
In researching Don Strack's UP roster, UP 6147 isn't listed under C44AC's, nor is SP 199 listed as being given a UP number.
More, there seems to be a numbering gap between UP 6081 and UP 6147.
What information am I missing, and how would I go about looking it up?
Thanks,
Doug Wilson

What I see is a fresh repaint without a flag.
Has UP started moving away from the flag scheme?

I believe that the Flags are now reserved for New Deliveries only. I remember reading an article some time back stating that even the flaged units will receive the lettering on the hood when time to be repainted due to cost.

This is more a comment than anything else. I think a great article could be written on the reasons and "logic" behind the screwy UP renumbering mess. It all started around the SP merger and hasn't stopped yet. What is it? I manager with a screw loose, competing empires, some rail fan "mole" in the motive power department? Don't hold me to it but I seem to have a shot of one unit with five different numbers. I've even thought UP should hire a bunch of guys, equip them with 4G computers, pickup trucks, blue cards, stencils, spray paint and stick on numbers, then send them forth throughout the system renumbering and updating the computer like maniacs until everything is at least in one "system" however goofy it might be.

Tried to get the frame number but could not make it out. The best I could see was a 1857-08 or 1857-98. Hopefully someone else has it out there.
