Nice photo, Chris! However, these units were not classified as SD40Es as you say, but rather SD40Rs. The "E" designation was for the SP Equipment Company and part of the R8 Program. That arrangement ended by January 1977, when the GRIP program replaced it. Still later came the M-99 Program, which in fact covers the SD40, SD45, and SD45T-2 rebuilds. Don Strack has an excellent presentation of Southern Pacific's rebuilding programs outlined here

BTW, correct data for this unit was submitted for Zack to update.
Also, I recommend moving the description of the unit sitting at Clyde Yard, along with the SP/BN trackage rights comments, under the Photo Remarks section instead. This way if someone else posts a photo of SP 7328 at a different location, it won't be covered under those same comments.
Again, very nice photo!

The documentation I have states that the SD40E program started with units #7300 and ended with unit #7343, with unit 7342 chosen to have an experimental paint scheme applied. The program started in March of 1980.
Rob, thank you for the nice comments on the photo and I will continue this comment later as I need to be somewhere right now.

Okay, getting back to this, I have additional information. Just to clarify things, the initial information I posted came from early documentation where the 7328 was classified an SD40E.
Now looking at a publication that came out fifteen years later this unit is designated as an SD40R, which is puzzling. I don't know which one is correct.
Anyhow, the frame id for that unit is 7861-65 and serial number is 31555. This was unit 8474 originally built 05/1966 and rebuilt on 10/1980.

Chris,
I don't want to start an argument, but what exactly is the source of your documentation? Is it directly from the Southern Pacific? or is it from the railfan press? Something I learned very early in my professional career, after watching a colleague get torn apart in a presentation for not "speaking with the data", was to always use credible sources and cite references whenever possible. If the information is merely an opinion or based on unfounded data, then you say so and use whatever means necessary to prove your case. Again, I'd like to know the source of your info regarding the "SD40E" designation. If it comes directly from the SP, I'm very interested in getting a copy or scan if that's possible.
One thing we've found in the railfan community over the past 20 or so years is that data has become more reliable and comprehensive than what was reported in the 1960s through early-1980s. Until even 15 years ago, I believe there was still much confusion over what some of SP's rebuilds were really designated. Don Strack, whom I know and have great respect for, is an exceptionally skilled and thorough researcher. Same with Joe Strapac. In fact, I've gotten to know Joe quite well over the past 15-years and am proud to have helped contribute over the years to many of his books.
Southern Pacific's SD40R rebuild program covered all surviving Espee SD40s except for three that were wrecked; SP 8402, 8423, and 8460. Eventually the program covered the remainder as SP SD40Rs #7300-7385. For details of their prior 8400-series numbers (they were NOT rebuilt in order), see pages 230-234 in Joe Strapac's book "Southern Pacific Diesel Compendium, Volume 2: Post-1965 SP and Cotton Belt Numbers, Union Pacific Transition".
FWIW, Joe's most recent book "Southern Pacific Historic Diesels, Volume 17: EMD SD40 Family Locomotives" contains a March 1993 photo of SP SD40R #7328 in Speed Lettering -- see page 111. This unit would eventually survive into the UP era, not being vacated from that roster (unnumbered) until 11/30/04.
BTW, the data for SP 7328 including builder #, order #, frame #, build date and rebuild date, and prior # were already provided to Zack by me, which I see he updated -- thanks, Zack!

In 1982 there was no trackage rights agreement for the SP/SSW to run on the BN between Kansas City and Chicago. That agreement came about in 1990. I think in 1982 the SP/SSW and BN were just pooling power through Kansas City.
