07/22/2010 12:34am  BNSF Dash 8-40CWs to Canadian National  Craig Walker

I had a chance to check on the former BNSF Railway Dash 8-40CWs that are now marked for Canadian National this afternoon. This list is incomplete (because they did too good a job of covering the old numbers on many of the units), but is a starting point:

CN 2136 is the former BNSF/ATSF (unknown) - Warbonnet
CN 2138 is the former BNSF/ATSF (unknown) - Premium Heritage (Heritage 2)
CN 2139 is the former BNSF/ATSF (unknown) - Warbonnet
CN 2140 is the former BNSF/ATSF 810 - Phase 3 / 2005 Wedge
CN 2141 is the former BNSF/ATSF 812 - Premium Heritage (Heritage 2)
CN 2142 is the former BNSF/ATSF (unknown) - Premium Heritage (Heritage 2)
CN 2143 is the former BNSF/ATSF 816 - Premium Heritage (Heritage 2)
CN 2146 is the former BNSF/ATSF (unknown) - Premium Heritage (Heritage 2)
CN 2148 is the former BNSF/ATSF (unknown) - Warbonnet
CN 2150 is the former BNSF/ATSF 830 - Premium Heritage (Heritage 2)
CN 2151 is the former BNSF/ATSF (unknown) - Warbonnet

Do you know what train these are leaving out on?

Is CN short on money or what? I can't remember CN ever taking on used locomotives like this before. First UP now BNSF. Who's next?

I believe that they are able to purchase these at "fire sale" prices, and they are too good to pass up. Most of the former UP and BNSF power, as I understand it, will be used as DPU power.

I'm not sure when these will be leaving Barstow yet, but there was a lot of activity surrounding these engines the last few days, leading us to suspect that they will be heading east soon. One of my sources thinks they may be leaving on a Monday, July 26th.

As a side note, the last of the BNSF Dash 8-40CWs stored at the Commerce facility (near Los Angeles) departed for Barstow today (7/22) at about noon. Many of the other 800s went to Texas, but this batch (as with the group going to the CN) are only going as far as Barstow.

I hope they invest in some paint. Some of these units are hideous.

I wonder if the units that are heading for TX, are bound for Mexico?

Since the last batch CN acquired (the ex-UP's) were/are all being repainted, logically we can expect all of these BNSF units to be as well.

I drove the line of these in Commerce some months back when they were stored and snapped pics of about half of them. The other half were behind a fence and I was on the wrong side of the sun anyway.. Just as I took the last pic, I was run off by security. Problem with the photos is, there's telephone poles lining the road they were stored on, so many have wires hanging down in front of them..

Some of these (Warbonnets) are really in dire need of paint. Others, in Swoosh/H3, etc. look pretty good.

For now, those are only going to Saginaw for continued storage.

Some of the units confirmed as CN's do not appear on the original list of units reported as CN at Barstow. This makes me think there are more than those 27.

It appears on the surface that CN 2135-2161 will be ex BNSF 800-852 (even), and of the 13 I have photographically matches, ALL fit that pattern. I cannot explain the 8 odd numbered units on the list of those reported relettered CN.

Thanks for all your work, David! It appears that these units were all the even numbered units (800-852) renumbered consecutively. So, from that, we can divine the missing numbers (which David Styffe did already, since I was too stoopid to figure it out myself!):

800 renumbered to CN 2135
802 renumbered to CN 2136
804 renumbered to CN 2137
806 renumbered to CN 2138
808 renumbered to CN 2139
810 renumbered to CN 2140
812 renumbered to CN 2141
814 renumbered to CN 2142
816 renumbered to CN 2143
818 renumbered to CN 2144
820 renumbered to CN 2145
822 renumbered to CN 2146
824 renumbered to CN 2147
826 renumbered to CN 2148
828 renumbered to CN 2149
830 renumbered to CN 2150
832 renumbered to CN 2151
834 renumbered to CN 2152
836 renumbered to CN 2153
838 renumbered to CN 2154
840 renumbered to CN 2155
842 renumbered to CN 2156
844 renumbered to CN 2157
846 renumbered to CN 2158
850 renumbered to CN 2160
852 renumbered to CN 2161

(So the two Davids figured it out!)

So is the 821, 811, 855, 801, 837, 861, 865, 856, 835 earlier reported re# to CN inaccurate ?

Apparently. Since the Santa Fe took delivery of the even numbered Dash 8-40CWs first, they were the first to be sold off as well.

Hideous? Na, I LOVE the original Warbonnet paint with the crazy patches. That engine is a work of art! It's a weatherer's dream come true. I guess everything is relative to the individual because I think that's one of the coolest things I've seen on this site. I would love to make a model of that...

I'd like to know if CN will keep the AC's on those.(?) I know that CN doesn't have them on their Dash 9's, but not too sure about GEVO's. Anyone have a clue?
